Electrotherapy Course

This one day electrotherapy course will equip you with a thorough understanding of the principles and concepts relating to electrotherapeutics in the clinical setting.

You’ll gain an understanding of the science and the research that supports the use of this modality, and learn to utilise a range of devices in the applications expored.

Both transcutaneous (via the skin) and intramuscular (via dry needles) electrotherapeutic techniques will be taught. You do not need to be trained in dry needling to attend, as non-needle based options will be taught also.

Participants will come away from this course being confident in the use of TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) and EMS (electrical muscle stimulation), and Microcurrent Therapy (MCT) for pain relief, injury rehabilitation, recovery and for the treatment of various musculoskeletal or neuromuscular conditions.

This course will encourage discussion and clinical reasoning to inform decision making relating to the application of a range of electrotherapeutic modalities. The course is taught by providing principles of application that can be applied for a range of clinical presentations ensuring you will be comfortable in applying electrotherapy on your patients. This highly valuable modality is a great asset to add to your skillset.

This highly practical workshop covers the following:

  • Historical context of electrotherapeutic modalities

Discuss the history and development of electrotherapeutic modalities.

  • Electrophysics and terminology

Gain an understanding of the fundamental principles of electrophysics and related terminology.
  • Application principles and case examples

Learn the principles of applying electrotherapeutic modalities and use real case examples to modulate pain and improve function.

  • Neurophysiology and mechanisms of action

Understand the neurophysiology underlying electrotherapeutic modalities and their mechanisms of action.

  • Cautions and contraindications

Understand the cautions and contraindications associated with the use of electrotherapeutic modalities.
  • Physical assessment

Apply physical testing methods and electrotherapeutic applications to assess and treat central and peripheral sensitisation.
  • Electrotherapeutic treatment for neuropathic pain

Apply electrotherapeutic techniques for the treatment of neuropathic pain presentations.

  • Objective measurement techniques

Perform objective measurements using handheld algometry and handheld dynamometry.

  • Integration through case studies

Integrate knowledge and skills through group-based case studies and practical applications.
